William Paynell

An early example of a lozenge shaped shield

William fought in the campaigns against the Scots, and was at Bannockburn in 1314.

He died in 1317, and was succeeded by his brother, John.

William appears in the St George's Roll, E189, where he bears

Argent two bars azure an orle of martlets gules

Thomas Paynell, died 1314, apears in St George's Roll, E203, & The Galloway Roll GA167, where he bears

Or two bars azure an orle of martlets gules

In the illustrations, I have not drawn martlets between the bars as they appear in the seal. The difference is not significant.
